The Gironde, covering a total surface area of 10,000 km2, is the biggest department in France and its estuary, formed by the convergence of the Garonne and the Dordogne, is so large that we even talk of the "European Mississipi".
It has the highest dune in Europe, at Le PYLA (112 m), a string of lakes, the forest of Les Landes and Gascony (the biggest forest in Europe) and 1,000,000 hectares of vineyards with legendary names and exquisite vintages.

You arrive in Bordeaux and you immediately have the impression that you are on a cinema set. Whether you are in the 'place de la Bourse', with its unique 18th century architectural ensemble overlooking the Garonne, the Saint Pierre district with its picturesque little medieval streets, the Quinquonces esplanade (the biggest square in Europe) where the Girondins column and bronze horses with their fountains stand proud or the Grand Théatre whose sculpted goddesses scrutinise the horizon, everything acts as a reminder that so many films are made here.
Bordeaux is also the Spirit of Laws by Montesquieu, the philosophical wisdom of Montaigne, the youthful memories of Mauriac; it's a great source of knowledge with the Musée d'Aquitaine where one can find out anything about the town and the region; it's the mysterious atmosphere of the Conservatoire National de la Plaisance (National Conservatory of Yachting) where yachts vibrate as if in echo to the barges of former times, when these traditional vessels, loaded up with wine, used to make their way slowly down the Garonne to the estuary. |
